Heavy exercise can create heat production that is 20 times higher than the amount of heat produced at rest. Without an efficient means to remove this excess heat, body temperature will rise quickly. During exercise, virtually all heat loss occurs via evaporation (sweat). Unless the water lost as sweat is replaced, the sweat rate will be reduced and body temperature will rise. Athletes must drink enough fluids to sustain the sweat rate.
